Description

This wall hanging was created during a liminal time of flow and creativity upon returning home from a time of ancestral travel to Ireland.
One of the {many} magical places I visited was on the coast of Northern Ireland where I was completely taken by a huge swath of earth and soil that contained large quantities of Red and Black Ochre.

Interestingly enough I had already started a weaving before I left using black and red yarns that reminded me of earth ochre, so upon returning home this piece {which is now listed here as an altar cloth} was what started it all…
For this piece though, I wanted to weave layers that represented the layers of earth, and how when the earth opens up we are able to see all of the many things that go into making soil such as plants, insects, sea creatures, mammals, and abiotic materials factors, like minerals, water, and air and how each one will create a different colour of soil.

The fibres used here are handspun mulberry & tassar noil, Nettle and Hemp.
I have added a small bone found in the irish sea, a seashell found in Costa Rica and a small Hag stone found in the English sea.

Hag Stones:
Are stones that contain a naturally occurring hole. These stones are believed to have magical properties and that looking through one will allow the person to see into the fairy realms. They were also supposedly had the ability to heal a snake bite, or see through the disguise of a witch.
These days witches love to wear them though! ha!

The hanging measures 53″ long and is hung from a piece of twisted vine.
