This stunning Selkie shawl was made with the old Selkie woman story in mind.
If you are not familiar with it, It is the story of a Seal/Selkie woman who has her pelt taken by a fisherman who then takes her away to his home because he has fallen in love with her. Over time she too feels like she loves him and has children with him, but the sea always calls her and one day upon finding her pelt she returns to the sea…

There has been many retellings of this story, but at the end the message is always that of a woman reclaiming herself and her heart’s desires….

I have made a few of these “Pelt” shawls over the years for women and folks who feel like they are at a time of their lives where they too are reclaiming their true selves and this shawl reminds them of that.

While I was weaving I was drawing on the ocean and the colours of a seal pelt along with bits of seaweed and the way the ocean moves to create a pelt that represents movement. freedom and a sense of not just the ocean but also of an actual seal pelt, and this shawl is truly all of those things combined. I hope you like it.

It was made using thick Merino and Irish wool yarns with hand spun pieces interwoven to create texture and a sense of playfulness.
